7th Armored Division
Tank Commander in World War II

With orders “to fight their way out”
Company commander, Stan Nizenski, believed that saving
the men’s lives by surrendering to the Germans was his only option. He told the company, “We are surrendering.”

Lt. Jack Wilson, 1st Platoon Leader, disagreed. He pulled his M1911A1 .45 auto pistol on the commander.

Over 100 Letters and his 1995 recollections

A unique History of the last 18 months of the war. The letters home provide a personal glimpse into his faith, fears, and hatred for death and destruction. His quote on war:

“War is indeed a very vicious and cruel occupation, but apparently, it is the only language that many people understand, hence the need.”

Research

The letters and his 1995 recollections had to be validated to war records and placed into a historical setting.

The 7th Armor Division’s and their Battalion’s daily reports detailed where he was on any given day and the battles they fought. This enabled matching his actions and letters to tell the story.
