Not just a memoir—this is history preserved through the eyes of someone who lived it.

World War II stands as a defining moment in history, with countless untold stories of heroism and sacrifice still waiting to be discovered. Jack’s Story: A WWII Tank Commander’s Journey is one such remarkable narrative.

Jack’s Story is a deeply personal memoir, built from over 100 letters Jack Wilson wrote to his family while serving as a tank commander in the European Theater of Operations. These letters, combined with his vivid battlefield recollections and meticulous research, offer a rare, firsthand perspective on the realities of war. Through his words, readers gain an intimate and authentic view of World War II, seen through the eyes of a young soldier navigating the chaos, sacrifice, and resilience of combat.

7th Armor and the Battle of the Bulge

The Battle of the Bulge is one of the most famous and studied battles of World War II, yet much of the attention focuses on Bastogne, often overshadowing the equally critical battle for St. Vith. This book sheds light on the importance of St. Vith and its role in halting the German offensive.

The German objective was clear: capture the Port of Antwerp. To achieve this, they needed control of the vital road intersections at Bastogne and St. Vith.

The 7th Armored Division, which Jack was a part of, was tasked with defending the northern advance route. Their heroic stand against the 6th SS Panzer Army has been largely overlooked in U.S. history—partly because the sector was placed under British command, specifically Field Marshal Montgomery (Monty), shifting American attention toward Patton and Bradley’s operations.

As the German advance intensified, defenses crumbled, and armored units found themselves trapped behind enemy lines. Monty’s orders were clear: “Fight your way out!”—Surrender was not an option.

Many did not make it. The harrowing details of Jack and his comrades’ fight for survival are revealed in this book.

After Christmas, the 7th Armored Division regrouped, replenishing equipment and personnel in preparation for a counteroffensive. By January 23, 1945, they successfully recaptured St. Vith, forcing the Germans to retreat and defend what remained of the Reich.

This book contains all the details of the untold story through Jack’s eyes and some of the daily battle reports of 7th Armored’s fight in one of the war’s most pivotal battles—a battle that helped determine the fate of the Western Front.

Historian Steven Smith’s Review

“New combat memoirs of the European Theater are rare—Jack’s Story is an essential addition. The 7th Armored Division played a pivotal role, and this book finally gives them the recognition they deserve.”
